1. My car is new!  I don't need rust protection now, right?

Actually, the best time to apply rust protection is when it is new, and free of rust.  Proper treatment can completely prevent rust and damage due to corrosion.  In fact, it is most economical to treat the car right away!
2. I have a car manufacturer's warranty against all rust!  Do I need further rust treatment?

Car manufacturers sometimes make claims that rust will not occur on "their" cars.  Unfortunately, the reality is that they are all inadequately treated, and will indeed rust.  Showroom salespeople are told to talk about galvanization or whatever the marketing folks have dreamed up for sales that year.  Sometimes, manufacturers will offer a "warranty" against rust, but when rust occurs (and it always does in Sweden's harsh driving environment), they normally will not repair it, unless there is a court order or perhaps extensive news coverage about the specific case.  Car maker priority is lower sticker price, and one way to cut corners is to skimp on the rust protection.   So unfortunately, progress is painfully slow in getting manufacturers to offer "real" protection, and back it with an ironclad warranty.
3. Some companies do not remove the plastic guards, flaps, covers, plugs, or even tires. Why?

Dirt and salt accumulate behind many removable parts, like mud flaps... sometimes several centimeters deep! Plug removal is necessary to treat inside the frame, doors, etc. Also, car makers almost never treat the metal behind the plugs, plastics, etc...  so we do what they should have done for you!  It takes one to two hours just to remove and replace the 50 to 80 screws, plugs, and parts on a typical car... plus two more hours for the cleaning, rust removal, and treatment of those areas.  Most customers are have no idea this is part of proper rust protection.  Sometimes, companies may simply skip these steps, and count on the customer not knowing about this!
4. Do you really clean dirt, salt, grime from the underbody?

You bet!  In fact, we do more than just a quick rinsing.  It typically takes about one or two hours or high-pressure cleaning, especially on cars more than two or three years old.
5. Most companies don't use a heated air machine to dry the car.  Why is it important?

A heated, forced-air air machine dries the metal completely and quickly, and it reduces the minor rust that can sometimes form on exposed metal.  Heating equipment is expensive to buy and costly to operate, to say nothing of the service bay that the car must occupy while drying!  So many companies quickly rinse some of the dirt off the underbody, then simply park the car for a day or two & let it dry.  Then they drive it back to a treatment bay and spray a coat or two of protectant on it, with no regard to minimizing rust.  The customer has no idea how they have been shortchanged, since the black coating looks almost the same anyway.  To be fair:  for many companies, this issue does not matter too much, since they don't remove existing rust anyway!  So the additional rust from their rinsing is often insignificant compared to the massive amounts of rust they lock to your car frame by covering it up with black protectant!
6. Why is it necessary to remove rust?

The rust must be removed to bare metal to provide the best bond for primer.  Failure to remove rust can lock moisture and rust to the frame, and even allow continued deterioration of the car structure.  Properly removing rust before application of protectant will prevent rust and corrosion for the life of the car -- this is why the Rostskyddsspecialisten can offer a real 10-year warranty!   And failure to remove rust is one reason why some companies do not (and can not) offer an ironclad warranty like ours.
7. Wait a minute... Company X told me that rust does not have to be removed!

Since you are reading this, you are likely a customer who is not fooled by such fancy "salesmanship."  Some companies say that their "thin" protectant is "penetrating" and "stops" rust.  At best, this is a half-truth, since it can sometimes be true under controlled conditions of very light surface rust, or in a scientist's laboratory.  Disgracefully, such claims are primarily a ploy for higher profits.

Removing rust from a car requires labor, equipment, infrastructure, and time.  If five minutes of hot air from a double-talking salesman and fancy brochure can convince some people some of the time, then it is "easy money" for those companies with low standards!

Yes, the reality is that the faster that some slick companies can collect your payment & get your car in and out of the shop, the more profit they make.  That's because removing rust slows a company's turnaround time for a car and decreases their profits... but removing rust is good for the customer & car.

8. What is the benefit to prime the underbody?

It is the best way to protect the car for long-term.  Even a car with significant rust can be fully protected for years, when the metal is rust-free and primed!

9. Why is it necessary to treat the inside of the frame and/or doors?

Moisture, salts, etc. will accumulate inside frames and doors, and begin corroding from the inside out.  Most people do not think about it until signs such as rust bubbles begin to show.  This means the metal is destroyed, and a rust hole now exists.  Proper treatment with Tectyl will prevent such damage!
10. Why are multiple coats of protectant better than on big, thick coat?

We have tested various methods, and multiple coats provide the best protection.  It is analogous to applying 2 or 3 layers of paint, rather than just one massive coat.  Also, each coat is applied from a different direction, which helps eliminate spraying shadows (areas blocked by something during the spray process).  This method is one reason ours is the best rust protection treatment and we provide a 10-year warranty!
11. Do you drill access holes in the car during treatment?

To protect the inside of a door, an access hole is usually required.  If the car maufacturer does not provide one, then we drill one, normally under the door lock mechanism on the end of the door, and it is not noticeable.  Unlike most companies, we treat the newly exposed metal.  We also plug the hole.
12. What is meant by "stable" (or non-leaking) rust treatment?

Protectants from some companies can continue to slowly ooze and flow for some time after the car is treated.  In fact, Tuff-Kote protectant can make such a mess that the company gives customers an "Autocleaner after treatment kit" and expects the customer to do any nasty clean-up work.
13. I see you give a free, high-quality carwash to each car you treat.  Most others don't.  Why?

Don't all companies give your car a carwash?!  No?
14. Why do you offer free digital photos on CD-ROM of the car during treatment?

Most of the real work of protecting your car is not easily visible when treatment is complete.  We enjoy providing you with photos of how your car was protected, and hopefully this might help spur other companies to provide better treatment, as customers begin demanding more from some companies.
15. You allow the customer to watch their car being treated.  Why don't all companies allow that?

Many companies do not want you to see what they actually do to your car.  They want you to look at a brochure, pay them a hefty fee, and then they want you to leave so you won't raise common-sense questions about what was done to your car.  Most of the real work of protecting your car is not easily visible when treatment is complete.  Watching and asking questions would slow their slick operations and reduce their profits, and (when pressed) some companies even try saying things like "our insurance won't allow you to see your car during treatment!".
16. Can you really provide an at-cost loaner vehicle to use while my car is treated?

Yes.  While we are caring for your car, you may use one of our, which we provide for only what it costs us!

17. Some companies frequently change names (or declare bankruptcy) -- how long have you been in business?

We have been in business since 1990, when we founded MotorMannens (a full-service garage).  In 1994, Rostskyddsspecialisten was founded, to specialize in car rust prevention.  Today, we are the best, the oldest, and the most experienced rust-protection company in Uppsala

Note:  Uppsala's Mr. Car Care (the company with the local Tuff-Kote Dinol affiliation) is a privately-owned garage and is about a year old, since their most recent name change/bankruptcy.  For instance, in 1996 it was "Mr. Car i Uppsala, AB".  In 1997 it was Mr. Car i Uppland, AB
-- their new company name is typically very similar to the one they abandon.  Often, they do not even mention their company name in advertisements (like the phone book), which helps them deceive potential customers.

18. Do you encourage customers to compare the Rostskyddsspecialisten treatment with others?

Yes!  Rostskyddsspecialisten is the best, and we suggest each customer compare and ask questions.

P. S., Perhaps we can eventually help elevate the quality of treatment by those other companies!
